1. WHAT BUSCOPAN IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR?

Buscopan has a spasmolytic effect (eliminates cramps) on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, bile ducts, genitals and urinary tract.
The active substance, hyoscinium butyl bromide, is a semisynthetic alkaloid of wolfberry with a quaternary ammonium group. Buscopan is used for spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, birth canal, and for cramps and dyskinesia (impaired movement) of the biliary tract.  

2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TAKE BUSCOPAN?

Do not take Buscopan: – if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to hyoscine butylbromide or any of the other ingredients of Buscopan, – if you have weakened skeletal muscles (myasthenia gravis), – if you have a very large colon (megacolon) – if you have intolerance to certain sugars because the medicine contains sucrose (see section Important information about some of the ingredients of Buscopan). Take special care with Buscopan:
– if you are prone to angle-closure glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye),
– if you are sensitive to intestinal obstruction or obstruction of the urinary tract,
– if you are prone to tachyarrhythmias (fast heartbeat).
Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
 
Buscopan may increase the effect of some medicines, so tell your doctor if you are taking: – tricyclic antidepressants (medicines used to treat depression), – antihistamines (medicines used to treat allergies), – beta sympathomimetics (medicines used to treat heart failure or asthma), – quinidine for the treatment of irregular heartbeat), – amantadine (a medicine used to treat Parkinson’s disease), – disopyramide (a medicine used to treat an irregular heartbeat), – other anticholinergics such as tiotropium and ipratropium (medicines used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Concomitant use of Buscopan with a dopamine antagonist (inhibitor) such as e.g. metoclopramide (a medicine used to treat poor gastrointestinal motility and digestive function) may weaken the effects of both medicines on the gastrointestinal tract. Buscopan may potentiate the tachycardic effects (accelerate heart rate) of beta-adrenergic drugs. Taking the medicine with food or drink The medicine can be taken with or without food. Pregnancy and breast-feeding Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Many years of experience have shown no adverse effects during pregnancy. Nevertheless, the usual precautions for the use of medicines during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, must be observed. The safety of treatment during breast-feeding has not been studied, but reports do not indicate adverse effects on the neonate. Driving and using machines No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed. Important information about some of the ingredients of Buscopan Each 10 mg coated tablet contains 41.2 mg of sucrose, which is 411.8 mg of sucrose at the maximum recommended daily dose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.  

3. HOW TO TAKE BUSCOPAN?

Always take Buscopan exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual dose is: adults and children over 6 years of age: 1 to 2 coated tablets of Buscopan (10 to 20 mg) 3 to 5 times a day. Take the tablets unchewed with a glass of water. If you take more Buscopan than you should If you take more Buscopan than you should, talk to a doctor or pharmacist immediately. Possible consequences of overdose are anticholinergic symptoms such as urinary retention, dry mouth, red skin, rapid heartbeat, inhibition of gastrointestinal motility and transient visual disturbances. If such symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.
 
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist. If you forget to take Buscopan If you forget to take a medicine, take it as soon as you remember. Take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Like all medicines, Buscopan can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Many of the side effects listed below can be attributed to the anticholinergic properties of Buscopan. The anticholinergic side effects of Buscopan are usually mild and limited. Side effects are ranked under headings of frequency: very common: affects more than 1 user in 10; common: occurs in more than 1 in 100 patients but less than 1 in 10 patients; uncommon: occurs in more than 1 in 1,000 patients but less than 1 in 100 patients; rare: occur in more than 1 in 10,000 patients but less than 1 in 1,000 patients; very rare: affects less than 1 user in 10,000; unknown frequency: cannot be estimated from the available data. Uncommon: tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), xerostomia (dry mouth), skin reactions, dyshidrosis (sweating disorders) Rare: hypersensitivity, urinary retention Not known: anaphylactic reaction (acute hypersensitivity reaction), anaphylactic life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction), dyspnoea (difficulty breathing)

5. HOW TO STORE BUSCOPAN

Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Buscopan after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store below 30 ° C. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. Such measures help to protect the environment.

What Buscopan contains The active substance is hyoscine butyl bromide. 1 coated tablet contains 10 mg of hyoscine butyl bromide. The other ingredients are: – tablet core: calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, maize starch, soluble starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, tartaric acid (E334), stearin palmitic acid, – tablet coating: povidone, sucrose, talc, titanium gum dioxide (E171), macrogol 6000, carnauba wax, white wax.
