Operation

Activated charcoal is an adsorbent with a high ability to bind toxins and gases from the gastrointestinal tract. A gram of activated charcoal has an area of 2000 m2 Due to the large area available for adsorption, it is particularly effective in various oral poisonings and diarrhea, as well as in tension (wind). Activated charcoal is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, nor is it metabolized.

Indications

1. Antidote to poisoning; It has been proven that activated charcoal is effective in reducing the systemic absorption of most organic substances, as well as many inorganic ones:
– analgesics and antipyretics,
– sedatives and hypnotics,
– alkaloids,
– tricyclic antidepressants,
– cardiotonic glycosides,
– organic solvents and other, highly lipophilic, substances.

However, it is not effective in reducing the systemic absorption of inorganic substances, which are usually in dissociated form in aqueous solutions:
– mineral acids,
– alkali,
– salts (eg NaCl, FeSO, etc.).

2. Diarrhea and tension:
Acute diarrhea is caused by a bacterial or viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Activated charcoal binds (adsorbs) toxins, products of bacterial metabolism and viruses that cause diarrhea.
Activated charcoal also effectively binds gases that accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract.
